Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Company, 1951. First Edition. 399pp. Octavo [24 cm] Tan cloth with gilt stamped leather labels on the front board and backstrip. Near fine. James Moyle (1858-1946) was a prominent Mormon on the national political scene working in both the Woodrow Wilson (Assistant Secretary to the Treasury) and Franklin D. Roosevelt (Commissioner of the U.S. Custom) administration. In addition he was the founder of the Utah Democratic Party and the President of the Eastern States Mission (1928-1933). This biography was written by the future LDS Prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley, based on the writings and research of John Henry Evans. "Like all good biographies, James Henry Moyle creates a personal relationship between reader and writer as tense and as closely mutual as that between friends. Gordon B. not only discloses Moyle's lovable qualities but also the strength by which he courageously mastered and used them. Gordon's graphic and discerning insight of the long and useful life has the… Read More

San Francisco: California Historical Society, 1954. First Edition. 86pp. Folio [44 cm] Red cloth with the title gilt stamped on the backstrip. Near fine. Complete with all seven maps. The four page prospectus is laid in. This volume was the logical extension of Morgan's biography of Jedediah Smith. Morgan and Wheat examined the notes taken by Oregon pioneer George Gibbs from a now-lost map of the trapper's western travels drawn by Smith in 1831, before the latter's demise on the Santa Fe Trail. Also considered is a letter concerning western flora, rediscovered after publication of 'Opening of the West,' belatedly adding botany to the litany of Smith's contributions towards a factual understanding of the American West. New York: Press of the Pioneers, Inc, 1936. First Edition. 233pp. Octavo [23.5 cm] Red cloth with the title gilt stamped on the front board and backstrip. Near fine/Near fine. A very nice copy of this biography on the legendary mountain man, Jedediah Smith, who covered much of the terra incognito of the American west in the early 19th century, including some of the most inhospitable (Mojave, Salt Desert, etc.). While he was doing all of this, the closest American town is the fledgling western metropolis of St. Louis. "Smith was the discoverer of the central route from the Rockies to the Pacific; leader of the party which made effective discovery of the South Pass; the first white man to cross Nevada; the first to traverse Utah from North to South and from west to east; the first American to enter California by the overland route; the first white man to conquer the High Sierras and the first to explore the Pacific Slope from San Diego to Vancouver." - from the jacket.

Glendale: Arthur H. Clark Company, 1925. First Edition. 230pp. Octavo [22.5 cm] Green cloth with title gilt stamped on the front board and backstrip. Near fine/Near fine. Well written memoir by the early Oregon pioneer and Michigan promoter, who's travels also took him to Hawaii, Rio de Janeiro and around the Cape. "The autobiography was written by Mr. Ball in his eightieth year, 1874, being taken from scanty diaries kept on his trips; old letters, and from memory. It was written in a journal and the manuscript is more legible than the writing of many a younger man. It is not only of local historical value but of national interest, dealing with the early history of New England, where he was born, early Michigan and pioneer western history, Mr. Ball having been a member of the third expedition to cross the Rocky Mountains." - 'Grand Rapids Chronicle' May 29, 1925.

At the age of twenty-three he was appointed county surveyor of Richland County, Utah, in an area now comprising two counties - one in Idaho, the other in Utah. Nice view of the Jubilee Parade with stands of people in the background. In January 1896, just days after Utah was granted statehood, Utah Governor Heber M. Wells suggested that the new Legislature assign a committee to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the arrival of Brigham Young's wagon into the Salt Lake Valley, the Semi-Centennial Commission planned to host a spectacular four-day celebration to honor the surviving pioneers. Only one year after Utah's statehood, organizers wanted the Pioneer Jubilee to be "the biggest celebration in the country since the 1893 World's Fair" and the largest event yet to be seen west of the Mississippi. The Jubilee served the dual purpose of showing the great advancement of the area in 50 years as well as demonstrating 1847 as the significant founding date of Utah (rather than 1896 statehood). [Salt Lake City], 1928. Broadside [29.5 cm x 23 cm] / [11.5" x 9"] printed in black ink. Tissue backed. Very good. General overall age-toning. Rare broadside for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the South Cottonwood Ward that was held August 31st, 1928, at their ward house. A program of events is printed with a list of the booths and attractions. The South Cottonwood Ward was the first LDS ward in Utah outside of Salt Lake City. It was settled in 1848 by Church members largely from Mississippi under the direction of Amasa Lyman of the Quorum of the Twelve. This large ward covered most of the southern half of the Salt Lake Valley, from Big Cottonwood Creek (4800-ish South) to present-day Draper and Bluffdale and from the Wasatch foothills to the Jordan River. When the ward was organized in 1849, the first bishop was William Crosby from northeastern Mississippi. In 1851, he joined Lyman in a trek to California, where they founded San Bernardino. We locate no other examples of this broadside. Rare. Read More
