About This Item
[Salt Lake City], 1928. Broadside [29.5 cm x 23 cm] / [11.5" x 9"] printed in black ink. Tissue backed. Very good. General overall age-toning. Rare broadside for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the South Cottonwood Ward that was held August 31st, 1928, at their ward house. A program of events is printed with a list of the booths and attractions.
The South Cottonwood Ward was the first LDS ward in Utah outside of Salt Lake City. It was settled in 1848 by Church members largely from Mississippi under the direction of Amasa Lyman of the Quorum of the Twelve. This large ward covered most of the southern half of the Salt Lake Valley, from Big Cottonwood Creek (4800-ish South) to present-day Draper and Bluffdale and from the Wasatch foothills to the Jordan River. When the ward was organized in 1849, the first bishop was William Crosby from northeastern Mississippi. In 1851, he joined Lyman in a trek to California, where they founded San Bernardino. We locate no other examples of this broadside. Rare.
