About This Item
New York: Press of the Pioneers, Inc, 1936. First Edition. 233pp. Octavo [23.5 cm] Red cloth with the title gilt stamped on the front board and backstrip. Near fine/Near fine. A very nice copy of this biography on the legendary mountain man, Jedediah Smith, who covered much of the terra incognito of the American west in the early 19th century, including some of the most inhospitable (Mojave, Salt Desert, etc.). While he was doing all of this, the closest American town is the fledgling western metropolis of St. Louis.
"Smith was the discoverer of the central route from the Rockies to the Pacific; leader of the party which made effective discovery of the South Pass; the first white man to cross Nevada; the first to traverse Utah from North to South and from west to east; the first American to enter California by the overland route; the first white man to conquer the High Sierras and the first to explore the Pacific Slope from San Diego to Vancouver." - from the jacket.
