He was apprenticed to Tait's Edinburgh Magazine and became managing clerk, before joining a company of strolling players - the experiences from which no doubt form the basis for this volume. Bertram returned to Edinburgh and set up as a bookseller and newsagent. In 1855 he was appointed the editor of the North Briton and in 1872 of the Glasgow News, leaving to become a freelance journalist two years later.

Slight marginal soiling to title page and a couple of interior pages. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this important genealogy. ~SP42~ [1.0P] Looks at the ancestry of, and traces the known descendants of, Luke Fish, Sr. (1760-1844), who married Margaret Smith (d.1804) and after her death, emigrated, probably with his son, Luke Fish, Jr. (1787-1866), who emigrated in 1818, from England to Montgomery County, Ohio, later moving to Shelby County, Ohio. Two of his children remained in England, and some descendants of theirs immigrated to Pennsylvania and elsewhere later. Descendants lived chiefly in the Midwest, with some in Pennsylvania and elsewhere, and some immigrated to Canada.
