Nice contrasts with faint rubbing to extremities of the mount. View of a group of men on the rear deck of a caboose. Thomas Houseworth and Co. is the company continued by Thomas Houseworth (1828-1915) after his partner George Lawrence retired in 1869. Houseworth was an optometrist and stereograph merchant located in San Francisco. The firm produced many of the best early views of California.

Two (different) private bookplates on the front pastedown. This edition was limited to 242 numbered copies containing two original Doves Press leaves on handmade paper, this is copy 29. Printed in three colors on handmade paper. Mounted photograph laid in as issued. As stated by Tony Bliss, Norman Strouse's great "fascination with T.J. Cobden-Sanderson as both printer and binder led him to collect all of the Doves imprints, to expand into the collecting of the work of the Doves Bindery, the personal bindings of Cobden-Sanderson, the bindings of Cobden-Sanderson's pupils, and the work of binders influenced by the master. Profusely illustrated work on the Sonoran Desert, a volume in the Time-Life series 'American Wilderness.' Edward Abbey (1927-1989) was a celebrated author, essayist, conservationist, noted pain-in-the-ass, and in many ways the father (or at the very least, uncle) of the modern environmental movements.

Nice map of the west that shows the enlarged territorial borders of Utah, that stretches from the Sierra Nevada to the Rocky Mountains. Salt Lake City is located and is named 'New Jerusalem.' Not in Moffat. Scarce.

Sacramento: California Alaska-Yukon Exposition Commission, 1909. 172pp. Octavo [23.5 cm] Blue cloth with nice color illustrated panels laid over. Very good. Bookplate on the front free endsheet. Work touting the Golden State that was produced for the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exhibition that was held in Seattle in 1909. Printed by W.W. Shannon, Superintendent State Printing. Similar publications under same title, were issued by the Louisiana purchase exposition commission, 1904, and by the Lewis and Clark exposition commission, 1905. Illustrated throughout with black and white views.

[Los Angeles]: Ward Ritchie Press, 1970. First Edition. 184pp. Octavo [24.5 cm] Black cloth with the title gilt stamped on the front board and backstrip. Near fine. Housed in publisher's gray slipcase, which is better than very good. Townsend's diary begins on November 22, 1851, with his assignment to the Pacific Division of the U.S. Army. After a trip through the Isthmus of Panama, he arrived in San Francisco on January 2, 1852. His diary provides detailed descriptions of San Francisco and Benicia, and the environs of San Francisco Bay during the Gold Rush. Kurutz 635.

Los Angeles: Western Litho, 1923. [74]pp. Oblong quarto [23 cm x 30 cm] Color illustrated wrappers. Near fine. Los Angeles area view book that contain 67 full-page captioned views of attractions, sites, and city scenes. Work opens with a four page description of the Al Malaikah's Los Angeles Temple and their representatives. The Al Malaikah Temple is home to world famous Shrine Auditorium. This is followed by a seven page introduction touting the area's beauty, modernization, schools, and economic opportunities. This is followed by the captioned views. "Every one who really knows Southern California knows that is a remarkable situation. He knows that if all the world realized what Nature has done for Southern California, and what man has done to aid nature, there wouldn't be standing room from the Mexican border to the tops of the Tehachapis. And why doesn't all the world realize this - what's the answer? Ah, Brother, it's because Nature is a wise old dame and all men are liars." - p[5].

Los Angeles area view book that contains 60 pages of captioned views of attractions, sites, and city scenes. Opening of work contains seven pages of introduction to the Los Angeles area that is interspersed with views. "We are a happy, prosperous people whose latch string is always out. The only quarrel we have among ourselves is whether Los Angeles has a finer climate in winter or in summer. Come out and help us settle the question. There's room for a million more on the tops of our hills, another on their slopes, and a third on the plain below. We already have in reserve the economic resources for that growth." - p[14].

One view has a short closed tear to the foot that has been repaired with tape. All views have nice contrasts. Three nice views of a nicely dressed man behind the wheel of a convertible. Two of the views are bird's eye showing the car rounding a corner on a dire road. The other view shows the vehicle parked with a driver, while a small group of nicely dressed men wave their hats.

Pictorial card of California that locates a few of the landmarks that are accompanied by brief descriptions. Max Poschin made a number of diecut pictorial map postcards from his studio in Southern California, through the 1940s and 1950s.

Single sheet [44.5 cm x 61 cm] printed on both sides and folding to pamphlet size [22 cm x 10 cm] Good only with some splitting at the folds and a small piece of tape on one of the panels. One side contains a map [22 cm x 40 cm] 'Washington-Sunset Route: Southern Railway, West Point Route, Louisville & Nashville R.R., Southern Pacific Lines ' and timetables for the trip from Washington DC and across the southern U.S. to California. The reverse prints a description of the cars and black and white views of the southwest (Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Mexico) and the map [9 cm x 18 cm] 'The Apache Trail of Arizona "Stop-over at Washington. San Francisco: Thomas C. Russell, 1919. 372pp. Quarto [26 cm] 1/4 brown cloth over gray boards with a paper label on the backstrip. Very good. Minor wear to boards with the front hinge starting. Fold-out present at the rear with a closed tear. Complete with all ten colored tipped in plates. This edition was limited to 250, numbered copies that are signed by the publisher. British merchant Alexander Forbes wrote the first book published in English relating exclusively to California. His narrative, as observed by Hubert Howe Bancroft, was not so much history as "a presentation by an intelligent man of business of the country's actual condition, capabilities, institutions, and prospects." His book, more than any other, made California known to the English-speaking world and spurred on both European and American interest in controlling this remote Mexican outpost. Zamorano Eighty: 38. This edition was printed in a limitation of 501 numbered copies, this is copy 181. Important and definitive work on early lithography in California that contains 112 illustrations of lithographic plates. Included in the text are short biographical sketches of the most important artists or producers of lithographs of the day. Among them are J.D. Borthwick (Three Years in California, 1857); Edward Bosqui (Grapes and Grape Vines of California, 1877); Frank Marryat (Mountains and Molehills, 1855); and Bayard Taylor (Eldorado, or, Adventures in the Path of Empire, 1850). Introduction and notes by Carl I. Wheat. Important firsthand account of the gold fields with eight tinted plates. Dame Shirley, as she is known in California literature, sailed around Cape Horn to San Francisco with her husband, Dr. Fayette Clappe. After a short stay in San Francisco, Dr. Clappe went off for the diggings at Rich Bar. Shirley joined him in September, 1851, and began a series of twenty-three letters to her sister back home in Massachusetts. She wrote the last letter in November, 1852. Moab, UT: Lin Ottinger Tours, 1972. Map. Single sheet [43 cm x 28.5 cm] that folds to pamphlet size [21.5 cm x 9.5 cm] Printed on both sides with folds as issued. Near fine. One side prints a map of Canyonlands and pinpoints a variety of locations in the separate areas of the Park (Island in the Sky - Needles - Maze) and the trails and roads that crisscross the area. The reverse prints descriptions of Lin Ottinger's legendary tours of the area with rates. "Canyonlands National Park encompasses a vast area and is surrounded on all sides by country of astonishing beauty. The map encompasses most of the Park, plus some of the outstanding country adjacent to it. The park boundary is not shown because it has no meaning as far as scenic values are concerned.

The discovery of gold on the American River, east of Sacramento, on January 24, 1848, caused Stockton to transform from a small settlement to a thriving commercial center, supplying miners heading up to the Sierra foothills. Stockton got its start when Captain Charles M. Weber, a German immigrant, decided to try his hand at gold mining in late 1848 but soon discovered serving the needs of gold-seekers was a more profitable opportunity. He then founded Stockton in 1849 when he purchased over 49,000 acres of land through a Spanish land grant. Saunders 53.

Nice image of Cascade Avenue in Colorado Springs with Cheyenne Mountain in the background by the famed pioneer western photographer, William Henry Jackson. William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) was one of the most prolific (and maybe the most famous) of Western artists. During his lengthy career, Jackson photographed and painted numerous views of the West between Nebraska and California, from cliff dwellings to industrial urban centers.

Minor rubbing to extremities. Image has strong contrasts. In 1870 Dr. Ferdinand Vandiveer Hayden invited Jackson to become the official photographer of the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories. Jackson remained with the Survey until 1878, working closely with the artist Thomas Moran and others. The official report of the Survey for 1875 stated of Jackson's photographs: "They have done very much, in the first place, to secure truthfulness in the representation of mountain and other scenery."
