[Los Angeles]: Ward Ritchie Press, 1970. First Edition. 184pp. Octavo [24.5 cm] Black cloth with the title gilt stamped on the front board and backstrip. Near fine. Housed in publisher's gray slipcase, which is better than very good. Townsend's diary begins on November 22, 1851, with his assignment to the Pacific Division of the U.S. Army. After a trip through the Isthmus of Panama, he arrived in San Francisco on January 2, 1852. His diary provides detailed descriptions of San Francisco and Benicia, and the environs of San Francisco Bay during the Gold Rush. Kurutz 635.
