Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc, 1935. First Edition. 227pp. Quarto [31 cm] Tan beveled cloth boards with the title on the front board and backstrip. Near fine in a very good jacket, that has a few small chips. Housed in the original slipcase that shows minor wear and age toning. This edition was printed in a limitation of 501 numbered copies, this is copy 181. Important and definitive work on early lithography in California that contains 112 illustrations of lithographic plates. Included in the text are short biographical sketches of the most important artists or producers of lithographs of the day. Among them are J.D. Borthwick (Three Years in California, 1857); Edward Bosqui (Grapes and Grape Vines of California, 1877); Frank Marryat (Mountains and Molehills, 1855); and Bayard Taylor (Eldorado, or, Adventures in the Path of Empire, 1850).
