About This Item
San Francisco: Thomas C. Russell, 1919. 372pp. Quarto [26 cm] 1/4 brown cloth over gray boards with a paper label on the backstrip. Very good. Minor wear to boards with the front hinge starting. Fold-out present at the rear with a closed tear. Complete with all ten colored tipped in plates. This edition was limited to 250, numbered copies that are signed by the publisher. British merchant Alexander Forbes wrote the first book published in English relating exclusively to California. His narrative, as observed by Hubert Howe Bancroft, was not so much history as "a presentation by an intelligent man of business of the country's actual condition, capabilities, institutions, and prospects." His book, more than any other, made California known to the English-speaking world and spurred on both European and American interest in controlling this remote Mexican outpost. Zamorano Eighty: 38. Cowan p.88. Howes F242.
