London: Printed for Alex. Hogg, 1790. vi,[7]-34,48-289pp. plus inserted plates (some on half-sheets). 12mo. Old calf, rebacked to style late 20th century, with new endpapers. Frontis, engravings. 1922 gift inscription on verso of frontis, some occasional foxing, spotting, and mild discolorations, but a good, sound copy. Denoted a "New Edition, revised and corrected," but in fact made up in part of sheets of the 1777 edition which was originally published in parts to accompany a similar edition of van Haeften's SCHOLIA CORDIS. Perhaps the most widely known of English emblem books, subject to frequent reprinting and adaptation following its first appearance in 1635. The error in pagination is a characteristic of the edition. ESTC T110761.
