Cleveland: The Colophon Club, 1923. Sewn printed wrappers. Tipped in portrait. Near fine. First edition. A scarce ephemeron, printing a letter by Cabell, as well as a Cabellian pastiche by the members of the Club. This copy is signed by Cabell. Samuel Loveman inscribed another copy, asserting that only ten copies were printed; that number is, of course, demonstrably an understatement.

Peacocks, Hurst, Berkshire, 1974. 29 volumes (plus two duplicates). Octavo. Sewn cloth-tape backed pictorial or typographic boards. Some dusting or rubbing to boards, binder's tape yellowed at inner hinges of some early numbers, but a good lot. A broad cross section of the superb antiquarian catalogues issued by George Sims, here in the form of the interleaved, boardbound special copies he had prepared for his own use. "Of these specially bound copies Sims has noted 'only two were done of each catalogue ... specially made for my own use, to list the customers who bought items, duplicate orders, etc. More often than not we only used one interleaved copy ...'" - David Holmes. GEORGE SIMS & FRIENDS (item 102). Present here are catalogues 18, 21, 22, 24-6, 28, 29, 35, 37-9, 42, 44, 45, 57, 52, 54, 59, 62, 64, 65, 67, 69, 70, 72, 74, 87 and 88, plus two additional copies of 69, suggesting that at least four were produced in that instance. Simply put, in his fields, the modestly produced catalogues of George Sims ... Read more

[A Collection of Thirty Books Issued in Douglas's "AMERICAN AUTHORS" Series]

[Howells, William D., et al]: Douglas, David [publisher]

  • Quantity available: 1
Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1892. Thirty titles, bound in eighteen volumes. 16mo. Contemporary uniform three quarter tan calf, gilt labels, spines gilt extra, t.e.g., original pictorial front wrappers bound in. Some minor darkening and light rubbing, bookplates, otherwise a very attractive set. A quite interesting representation of this series, published in pocket-size format at a price of 1s per volume, occasionally at the expense of the American writers whose works were not protected due to laxity of international copyright laws. A few titles, however, seem to have enjoyed their authors's blessings; some are denoted as "Author's" editions, and at least one features a new Preface written expressly by the author. Authors here represented are: J.L. Allen (2 titles); John Burroughs (6 titles); George W. Cable (2 titles, including the actual first edition of MADAME DELPHINE, CARANCRO, AND GRANDE POINTE, BAL 2344 "not seen"), Mary E. Wilkins Freeman (2 titles); William Dean Howells (14 titles); Frank Stockton (2 t ... Read more
