Good copy of this pocket book of French fashion.Complete with 100 lithographs by George Scharf from original fashion plates by Hippolyte Lecomte in Costumes civils et militaires de la monarchie francaise.Subjects include Joan of Arc, Bloody Mary, Queen of Scots, Ninon de Lenclos, many French kings and queens, courtiers, mistresses, soldiers, knights, politicians and admirals, from five centuries of French history.Published by famous London printer and lithographer Charles Hullmandel (1789-1850). Hullmandel was a prolific publisher and instrumental in many major improvements to lithography in the 1820s and 1830s. Lithographer George Scharf (1788-1860) was a Bavarian-born artist and one of the best lithographers operating in London at the time. Pigskin spine cracking on front hinge, marble boards scuffed and grubby, title page with smudges at top, but all other 99 plates clean and bright.

Some wear at the head and tail of the spine. Corners a bit bumped. All edges gilt. Interesting picture book illustrating this period of French history and culture.

The 1854 edition of Jacob Abbott's The History of Madame Roland, part of the Abbott's Histories series. Red cloth, blindstamped on both front and back. Gilt on spine. Famed full-color frontispiece is intact, as is tipped-in protective tissue. All eight B&W engravings are intact, including frontispiece. (Plate on page 97 has a deckled bottom edge.)Spine is discolored and darker than rest of jacket, with slight wear on heel and top. Pages are age tanned and have small stains. Two of the pages are uncut.All four endpapers are significantly discolored with a black waxy substance (see photos), something like crayon.
