Burn Rate - How I Survived the Gold Rush Years on the Internet

By Wolff, Michael

London: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1998. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. First UK edition. In the 1980's Michael Wolff was a journalist and writer; in 1998 he is a journalist and writer again. But for a few years in the first half of the 1990's, he was an internet entrepreneur, Chairman and CEO of Wolff New Media, a minnow in the turbulent pond of internet businesses, but a company that was nevertheless, for one brief heafy moment, valued at 150 million US Dollars. His story is of a strange and surreal world in which companies are valued only in terms of their promise and their hype, where profits, losses and revenues seem to be so much trivia. As companies' paper valuations skyrocket, along with their staffs and the perks and salaries of their executives, their revenues - with very few exceptions - are almost non-existent, and their losses reach ever more staggering levels. This is a story of of the game of the hunt for capital, for suckers with a starry future in their eyes, be they bankers, venture capitalists, stock market investors or the executives of AOL, Time Warner or the mighty Microsoft. 203. Stewardship - Choosing Service Over Self-Interest

By Block, Peter

San Francisco: Berrett-Koehler, 1995. A Fine unmarked copy in red cloth boards with VG dustjacket which is not price clipped. xxiv + 264 pages. First edition, seventh printing. Managing in a Time of Great Change

By Drucker, Peter F.

Oxford: Butterworth Heinemann, 1995. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket. 'It is so very difficult to predict the future. It is only pointless...what is always far more important are fundamental changes that happened though no one predicted them or could possibly have predicted them.' It is these unpredictable and irreversible changes from the past, and their effect on the role of the executive which Peter Drucker examines. The management of change is a subject which has been, undoubtedly, the principal preoccupation of management thinkers in the 1990's. Peter Drucker, the guru's guru, brings together a group of his own original essays and interviews on this vitally important topic, and as ever, provides invaluable food for thought. **** NOT EX LIB **** **** NOT BOOK CLUB **** 14. From Making to Music - THe History of Thorn EMI

By Pandit, S.A.

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1996. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. First edition, first printing. x + 270 pages. 34 illustrations. Thorn EMI was formed in 1980 as a result of the acquisition of the leading entertainment company, EMI, by one of the UK's largest manufacturer, with the aim to create an enterprise integrating entertainment software, the manufacture of consumer electronics and high technology. This ambition proved hard to realise and in subsequent years, critical decisions, such as a failed bid for British Aerospace and the acquisition of micro-chip manufacturer Inmos, weakened the company. In 1985, following a management change, the company abandoned its strategy of diversification, and Thorn EMI was ruthlessly pruned and over 100 businesses with combined sales of more than 2.6 billion Pounds were sold. Concentrating on music, music retailing and rental, the companies were demerged into two independent ones. In charting the history, the author highlights the demise of Britain's manufacturing industry and the emergence of the service sector. C3C. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

The Manipulators - A Conspiracy to Make Us Buy

By Robinson, Jeffrey

London: Simon and Schuster, 1998. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine price clipped dustjacket. 310 pages. First edition, first printing. The author picks up from where Vance Packard, the author of The Hidden Persuaders, left off, to explore the multi billion pound global business of advertising. He unveils the new sciences that are being devloped to turn the ads we see into magic bullets which can penetrate our defences, how modern retailers are following hot on the advertisers' heels with their own sleight-of-hand to snap off any lingering resistance to buy, how we unknowingly contribute to our own commercial seduction, how the worst is yet to come, as the internet and television combine to create a monster whose sole function will be to pick us off, one by one, and make us buy. An incisive and ultimately disturbing investigation of the way advertising has shaped our world today. **** NOT EX LIB **** 14. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
