1685 Rosinus Romanarum Antiquitatum ROME Constantine Julius Caesar Plato Pliny

First appearing in 1585, Johannes Rosinus's "Antiquitatum Romanarum" was an extensive historical work on Roman antiquities. It saw numerous editions over the course of the next fifty years, though the most important was Thomas Dempster's edition. Dempster's edition included a dedication to King James I which earned him the title of royal historiographer.

This impressive 1685 edition includes illustrations that depict iconic Roman monuments, architecture, coins and medals, and a folding map. Other notable descriptions include life of Albertus Magnus, works of Aldus Manutius, Anacharsis, Aristotle, Charles V, Gregorian Codex, Popes, Constantine, Chrysologus, Cicero, Julius and Augustus Caesar, Plato, Pliny the Younger, Socrates, Valerius Maximus, Virgil, Thomas More, Thucydides, and many more.

"Human virtue should be equal to human calamity."
--Robert E. Lee

John Esten Cooke was an American novelist, writer and poet. During the American Civil War, Cooke served as a staff officer in the Confederate States Army cavalry.

After he started writing, he almost immediately became a successful novelist and prolific short story writer, eventually authoring 31 books and almost 200 published articles and poems Even before the end of the war, in 1863, Cooke wrote the first of several popular biographies, that of Stonewall Jackson. His later efforts at biography, such as this biography of Robert E. Lee as well as officers that he had personally known, were considered more accurate that his early Jackson biography.

"A Life of Gen. Robert E. Lee" was published just after Lee's death. It includes 25 illustrations and maps.

"Men of outstanding ability are more likely to lack the power of controlling their own people than of defeating an enemy in battle."
― Livy, The History of Rome

Few works on the history of Rome are as important and impactful as Livy's 'Ab Urbe Condita.' Livy began working on this work at the end of the 1st-century BC and covers the earliest times and the foundation of Rome through the reign of Caesar Augustus.

This extremely rare 16th-century printing of Livy was published in Frankfurt, Germany in 1578 and features the commentary of Wilhelm Godelevaeus and Sigmund Feyerabend.

Description:
1680 RARE Franciscan Fortunat Hueber Solemnis Sublimis Bible Devotional Vellum

Fortunatus Hueber was a 17th-century German historian and confessor who was relatively unknown outside of Bavaria. Nevertheless, he wrote many treatises on Franciscan saints and foundations as well as devotionals and church histories. One of his lesser-known works was "Apparatus Solemnis Sublimis" – a devotional describing the character of Christ through signs, anecdotes and sayings of church fathers, and descriptions of ecclesiastical concepts and symbols. Each section or 'apparatus' of this book is based on a verse from scripture.

The decorative vellum binding on this 1680 first edition is particularly desirable, especially with the functioning leather and brass clasps.

1836 AFRICA 1ed Lander Niger River Exploration Illustrated Maps Slavery

Richard Lander was an English explorer who made his name for his voyages into Africa. After nearly a decade of African voyages, the British government sent Richard and his brother John in 1830 to explore the Niger River. While at the river delta, they were captured by local tribes for a short time. Their voyage did yield grand results – they discovered the Niger River course and outlets.
The specifics of the journey were written and published under various titles, including 'The Travels of Richard and John Lander'. This work is a fascinating account of African culture, geography, and 19th-century exploration. This 1836 first edition includes nine fine, full-page engravings, including maps and views of local tribes.

1822 Famous 2ed David Porter Journal USS Essex Battle of Valparaiso War of 1812

David Porter was an early American naval captain who served on the USS Constitution and the USS Essex. While aboard the Essex, Porter faced significant hardships, including the Battle of Valparaiso where the ship was ultimately disabled. Porter kept a journal of his time aboard the Essex, a journal that was quickly published after capture of the Essex.
According to Hill, the second of Porter's 'Journal' is the "best edition" and is more complete even than the first. In fact, this edition contains the first instance of the details of Porter's loss of the USS Essex in 1814. This edition also includes an expanded preface as well as folding maps and notes and illustrations on the Galapagos Islands.

It was designed to aid builders and designers in the realization of their architectural projects. It focuses on all five of the major orders (or styles) of architecture – Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Tuscan, and Roman. (Fabrizio)
This 18th-century French edition includes 84 impressive architectural engravings and features a short treatise on stone cutting and carpentry, as well as lessons on the work of Vignola by Claude Delagardette.
