San Francisco: The Whitaker and Ray Company (Incorporated), 1903. 189p., publisher's ad leaf (instructive in inself), first edition thus in grey cloth boards decorated with thematic cannon imagery, quite soiled and rubbed and a little shaken. Compiled from "the one hundred and thirty volumes of War Records, union and confederate." Last episode, "Prison days of Jefferson Davis," concludes with the following uplift penned by Bell, an Oakland resident: "It was a war planned from the beginning by the Almighty and fought by American pluck and endurance to its appointed end
