The 11 volume set is in good condition with minor scuffs and signs of wear in the slipcases and hardcover cloths. The spines are slightly faded as usual (volume 11 - Metropolitan Museum is slightly more faded then the other volumes). Volume 5 (British Museum) and volume 9 (Freer Gallery of Art) show minor wear marks on the top of the slipcase. Far Eastern Ceramics is in very good condition showing minor signs of shelf wear, namely some marks on the front and back cover. The ribbon bookmark is slightly scuffed on the bottom. Old blanks are gone, this has new blanks. Only interior markings are pencilled numbers on back of title page. Some foxing in text, heavier in maps. Many pages uncut. 17 unpaginated maps and one plate of vocabulary. Set is a compilation of journals and texts from every major European voyage of discovery from antiquity to 1800. Kerr is not so much an author as an editor. Wherever possible he reproduced the original texts and journals. He edited them to reduce redundancy but maintain fidelity to the original text. His first volume shows the trouble he went to. He has rendered into English 9th century Icelandic texts then proceeds on to 9th and 10th century Anglo-Saxon texts. One of 1000 sets printed on Japon vellum (The Apochrypha is one of 1250 copies) from a total edition of 1075 copies. The typography was arranged by Frances Meynell. Each volume decorated with copperplate engravings by Stephen Gooden, including the title pages. A lovely clean set finely bound in recent full black morocco, decorative gilt border to boards. Spines with raised bands, each with decorative gilt piping and ruling. Red title labels, gilt. Top edges gilt, others untrimmed. A beautiful set.

J.M. Dent: London, 1897. Limited Edition. Quarto. In two volumes limited to 1250 copies after which the type was distributed. Continuous pagination. This beautiful set was published by J.M. Dent in 1897, following their 1893 edition of Malory's Morte D'Arthur, illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley. This was a major work issued as a companion to the Beardsley Malory which was now pictured and decorated by Louis Fairfax-Muckley whose magnificent illustrations recall Beardsley's though lacking the erotic images in the borders. Some of the decorative vegetation Faix fax-Muckley used, for instance, is reminiscent of that found in Dent's Morte D'Arthur though his illustrations are also more consistent with the depiction of the characters in the text (see the image of the Redcross Knight as he fights the dragon). In addition to the border, nicely populated by dragons, the image is partially enclosed by a form of the Gothic bracket that the manuals describe. Hardcovers bound in late 19th century 3/4 brown morocco with marbled paper-covered boards. The bindings show some rubbing and bumping but are sound with secure hinges. Top edges gilt. Deckled edges to the text block. Each volume has a 19th century elaborate bookplate of "William Arthur, Sixth Duke of Portland." There are some discrete library markings; faint evidence of removed labels on the spines. There is an ink-stamped number at the foot of the "Contents" pages in each volume.
