New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1939. First Edition . Cloth. Good+/Good+. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The author's scarce second novel and second mystery based on the railroad industry. Railroad Detective Andy MacVeigh and his wife Sue try solving the murder of a dancer in New York's Grand Central Terminal. From the dj flap: "The author was given the run of the Grand Central Terminal and the elaborate underground system by the New York Central Railroad." The front and rear endpapers consist of a map "Plan of Grand Central Terminal at Express Level." Salmon cloth with blue titles. Age-toning to paper. Bookstore stamp at top (barely visible) & bottom edges of text block, front & rear endpapers, and to one interior page, not affecting any text. A mild slant to the spine. Soiling to edges of text block. Previous owner's bookplate on verso of half-title page. Boards lightly soiled. Tightly bound, corner tips very good, and text clean. Dust-jacket, now protected in a removable archival plastic cover, has 7 spots of tape repair to inside surface, age-toning, & edgewear, including chips and tears, not affecting any text or illustration. The largest chip is at the spine head & measures about 3/8 by 2 inches. Some rubbing, especially on spine, but not affecting any text or illustration. Unclipped - original price remains on flap. Cover art still attractive. An atmospheric, New York City murder mystery and a very scarce book indeed.

Description:
Houghon Mifflin Company, 1941. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. Book is clean with a square, tight binding and bright pages. Book has minor wear on the edges that is difficult to see in the scans, including a book length crease on front cover and several pages in and a faded spine. A Mystery Novel of the Month 9 (no. 27) From the start Andy seemed to sense we were going to run into trouble that night. A nameless uneasiness possessed him. Twice before we left home he asked me if I were sure I wanted to go to the theater. I took it as a joke both times because I had nagged for months and it was the last chance to see Mida King in She Lands on Her Feet. Saturday, the sixteenth of April it was, the show to end its Broadway run after that night's performance. I had wanted to see She Lands on Her Feet more than I'd ever wanted to see any show. The MacVeighs, however, did not emerge from the toils of a murder investigation before the first spring thaw. Last October Andy, headquarters man in…

Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1939. First edition. Cloth. Good/Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5". None. A very scarce first edition of MacVeigh's Grand Central Murder. 'Grand Central Murder' is about a murderer who escapes custody, who's ex-girlfriend is found dead just a couple of days later. With decorative map endpapers. A film based on the book was released in 1942, starring Van Heflin. In a red cloth binding, with a price clipped dust wrapper. Externally, generally smart. Light bumping and some loss to the extremities, and a few handling marks. The dust wrapper has been reinforced with paper strips, and is very good with just a few closed tears and a little loss to the extremities, some rubbing and marks. The joints are starting, but still reasonably firm. Internally, the binding is tender in places. The pages are bright and clean, with a few marks to the endpapers. Good

First Edition. (1993) Hardcover with d.j. Fine with near fine dust jacket. D.J. has slight curl on top edge and light rubbing on back. No worn edges. Tight binding with clean, sharp pages. No markings. 305 pages. Dolores Claiborne is a psychological thriller novel. The novel is narrated by the title character. Atypically for a King novel, it has no chapters, double-spacing between paragraphs, or other section breaks; thus the text is a single continuous narrative which reads like the transcription of a spoken monologue. This book is dedicated to King's mother: "For my mother, Ruth Pillsbury King."

Collins White Circle Pocket Edition #228. Great 1940s cover! Colonel Anthony Gethryn must prove a man innocent of a murder he's been convicted for in only 5 days. MacDonald was a great practitioner of the mystery-suspense genre; his books remain readable, even if his characters are nowhere near as enlightened as we tend to be today.
