Lipsiae/Leipzig: Sumtibus Frid. Christ. Guil. Vogelii, 1828. Volume I, published in 1828, is entitled Heroides, Amores, Ars Amatoria, Medicamina Faciei et Remedia Amoris; Volume II, published in two parts in 1832, contains Ovid's narrative poem Metamorphoses. In a contemporary binding of polished calf over marbled boards, raised bands, gilt spine lettering. Leather is worn to the corners and boards rubbed; the binding of volume I is cracked and the lower cover detached, but the other two books are firmly bound and very good. Spotting to the end papers and title pages, the text is bright and crisp. Ownership inscription dated 1875 of Francis Pierrepont Barnard, Hon fellow of Pembroke College, Oxford, along with his armorial bookplate. Extra shipping charges may apply to this set. Good plus 1828

Near Fine. 9x22cm Two engraved receipts from the oldest British bank and the fourth oldest bank in the world, dated to 1797, made out to the London lawyer John Thomas Batt. The receipts are printed, and accomplished in manuscript at the bank. Both receipts signed 'Mr H Hoare'. Old folds, otherwise very good. One receipt is for £2000 and the other £4000, the first involving Everard Fawkener, presumably of the 11th Dragoons and the second, Robert Blake. Near Fine 1797

UK: Unpublished, 1907. Hardcover. Very Good. Large folio manuscript bound in illustrated boards with silk ties; calligraphic manuscript title page: 'Pan and Luna by Robert Browning illustrated by R. Wheatcroft' in black ink. The text which is loosely sewn into the binding alternates manuscript pages with four original, matted watercolour illustrative plates that depict a night time landscape, a night sky, and two forest scenes. A few pen jottings suggest this version of the manuscript may have been considered for publication but we can find no trace of it's having appeared. Very Good 1907

Very Good. ff 188 Bound typescript of Miskin's novel inspired by Andreyev's short story, covered in proof corrections and with typographical instructions and double page spreads on tracing paper showing the layouts for the half title, title page, chapter headings and sample text page, annotated 'Specimen pages for Willmer Brothers Ltd for Weidenfeld & Nicolson Limited' with exact dimensions given and dated by hand, October, 1968. An additional page printed on yellow foolscap of 'Setting Instructions for printers' has been annotated, presumably by Willmer Brothers, regarding their ability to conform to the Weidenfeld style guide. The typed text is corrected to every page, most on matter of spelling and punctuation but also with substantive changes to the text. The book is bound in handsome pebble green cloth with the Institute's crest in gilt on the front board and is in very good condition with a little wear at the head of the spine. (The binder's ticket of Bone and Son appears to the rear.) London: Unpublished, 1916. First World War Visitors Book recording Royal visits to the women munitions workers in the factories built on Park Royal, west London. Small quarto, expensively bound in pebbled black morocco with gilt lettering and decoration; rounded spine. Inner dentelles over rich grey marbled endpapers; all edges gilt. Card leaves held on linen stubs. All in near fine condition. King George V visited the munitions factory late in 1916, signing himself 'Nov: 28th 1916. George R.[ex] I.[mperator]' - king and emperor. The future Edward VIII visited towards the end of the war with his mother Queen Mary. At the top of the page she wrote: 'Mary. March 14th 1918.' Below her is written 'Edward P.[rince of Wales]' and ditto marks so he didn't have to bother writing the date himself. Robert Henley, second Earl of Northington (1747-1786), was a politician and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland who corresponded extensively with his friend the lawyer John Thomas Batt who subsequently took charge of the disposal of his estate after his early death. Northington's primary residence was The Grange, Northington, a building which survives as a Grade I listed English Heritage property and the home of Grange Park Opera.
