FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT (1882-1945). Roosevelt was the Thirty-Second President. TLS. 1 pg. 8” x 10”. November 8, 1940. The White House, Washington. A typed letter signed “Franklin D. Roosevelt” to “Honorable Mon C. Wallgren”: “Please accept my sincere thanks for your message of congratulations. I appreciate it more than I can say. May I, in turn, congratulate you on your election to the Senate!” This letter was signed and sent by Roosevelt just days after his landslide re-election to an unprecedented third term as President of the United States in 1940. The letter was sent to Monrad Wallgren, who was then serving as a Democratic U.S. Congressman representing Washington. As Roosevelt mentioned, Wallgren had just been elected to an open U.S. Senate seat in Washington. Wallgren would serve as a U.S. Senator until 1945, when he resigned upon election to a single term as Governor of Washington. The letter has a mailing fold and is in very fine condition with a giant autograph.

A typed letter signed “FDR” as President on “The White House” letterhead. Roosevelt wrote to his former law partner, Basil O’Connor, in New York. “Dear Doc: - Will you keep Miss Wallace in mind? I cannot begin any cataloguing until I have unpacked the records and that will be work for about one year more. She sounds thoroughly qualified. As ever yours, FDR”. The letter has a stamp in the upper right-hand corner indicating when it was received at the offices of O’Connor & Farber and a handwritten notation by O’Connor. There is a mailing fold and it is in very good condition.

ARTHUR W. MITCHELL (1883-1968). Mitchell was the first Black Democrat elected to Congress. He served Illinois from 1935 to 1943, and he was the only Black member during that time. Born in Alabama, he attended the Tuskegee Institute, Columbia University and Harvard University. Although Mitchell was a Republican early in life, he switched parties in 1932 with the election of Franklin Roosevelt. In 1934, he defeated the Black Congressman Oscar De Priest. Much of his time in Congress was spent introducing anti-lynching and anti-discrimination bills. Scrapbook. Approximately 50 pages. Circa mid 1930s. July 1863-March 1864. A set of six financial documents relating to two ships. The barque Texas and the barque Alamo were owned by Oliver H. Perry, a shipping merchant from Southport, Connecticut. The Texas was lost at sea in late 1862 while serving the Union cause during the American Civil War. Five of the six documents report Perry’s earnings on the ships. These are from Connecticut shipping company Wakeman, Dimon & Co., who operated Perry’s ships. The sixth letter is from the Atlantic Insurance Company. It concerns Perry’s insurance policies on the ships. The documents are in very good condition overall with folds.
