About This Item

TLS. New York. A typed letter signed "John J. Carty" to the Secretary of the Carnegie Corporation: "To commemorate your safe return from your recent travels in Africa, and in acknowledgement of your narrative of them which you sent to me, I am sending to you an account of his own African travels by Mungo Park, Surgeon, published in the year 1799. This distinguished African explorer was born in Selkirkshire, Scotland, and was educated at the University of Edinburgh, your own native city. It is the thought that this record of his travels may therefore be of special interest to you in connection with the expedition to Africa which you undertook, I may well say, under the patronage of that distinguished countryman of Mungo Park, your old friend Mr. Andrew Carnegie... ". The letter is in very fine condition overall.
