Red white-lettered cloth, corners bumped but main problem is extensive blotchy pigment loss to front which would reduce its rating to Good-. f/piece (portrait photo of author wearing mortar-board with ruler in hand hat examining skull) + 188 + (4, 3 notices of her other books and press puffs), 46 line figs. to first part, 30 portrait image plates to part 2 ex-pagination, nearly all photos; internally very good. Undated but presumably Edwardian, a web search hit suggested this publisher issued nothing after 1900, but this includes an image of King Edward VII plus Ellen Terry, Henry Irving and Sarah Bernhardt as well as Edward Marshall Hall K.C., M.P. who only became an M.P. in 1900. One of the better Phrenology books from its later period and free of usual hackneyed images which had been around since the 1920.s. Apparently very scarce. 14 cm x 19 cm

US Houhgton Mifflin pub.date variously given as 1900 and 1901, author's Preface is dated November 1900 so former seems a little dubious unless his Preface date was taken as pub.date. xvii+375, uncut fore-edge. top edge gilt; patchy tanning to endpapers and paste-downs, otherwise internally clean, tight and unmarked,. Dark red covers with gilt sp. lettering generally clean and unworn, top half of back has trace of fading, main problem is bottom back joint which was split for just under a cm., have closed this fairly effectively. Despite this last fault a remarkably clean and bright copy of this early example of the genre, and tanning is probably common to most copies. Fine/VG(-). 14 Cms x 22 Cms. xiv+193, numerous figs numbered by chapter; book near pristine but clipped jacket, sealed in protective sleeve when acquired, has widespread, but light, surface rubbing and faded spine, edges however appear unrubbed. An exposition, with comments, on 4 major topics in history of science: circulation of the blood, planetary motion, periodic table and gene theory, addressing the unqiue epistemological features of each. O'Neil (1912-1991) was the most eminent Australian psychologist of his era at Sydney University. This work appears to have been written independently of the Kuhn- Popper-Lakatos-Feyerabend maelstrom in Europe and North America, but touches on very similar issues. A very acceptable copy of this groundbreaking study, now largely forgotten due to the retrospective shadown cast by Kinsey's later famous/notorious work.
