Third in The Makers of Modern Literature series. An early study from the leading literary critic. Lustig's jacket and series colophon pen-in-hand design is uncredited. Spine scuffed with titles and decorations worn away, hinges parting, edges rubbed, corners bumped, "Chas. Short 1870" in ink on front endpaper, leaves minimally foxed and age toned. Polish Jesuit Sarbievius (1595-1640) was one of the great Latin poets of the 17th C, considered the Christian Horace.

Prentiss" the blank titled "Inspector." Slight age-toning to edges, else Fine. The certificate identifies a cask containing 52 gallons of wine was imported by [Captain] "Wm. J. Nath. Hooper" in the American vessel Joanna. Inspector Joshua Prentiss (1744-1837) served in the Revolutionary Army in Captain John Merritt's company, which was part of Col. John Glover's regiment. As evinced by the titles, most relate to the history of mail in early California or to Californian business personalities and their companies during the period.

Margaret Hall received her PhD. from the University of Washington and focused her work on the history of women in academia; Benjamin Hall was a renowned professor of genome sciences and biology at the University of Washington. Dust jacket is now preserved within a clear, removable archival sleeve.

Inscription reads, To Nell Payne / with the sincere regards and / compliments of the author. John Howard Payne (1791 - 1852) was the singular American actor, poet and playwright. Today he is mostly known as the composer of the song "Home! Sweet Home!" However, he had a successful career on the stage, beginning in London, and as a playwright. Thereafter he befriended the Cherokee Indians and fought for their territorial rights.
