Inscription reads, To Nell Payne / with the sincere regards and / compliments of the author. John Howard Payne (1791 - 1852) was the singular American actor, poet and playwright. Today he is mostly known as the composer of the song "Home! Sweet Home!" However, he had a successful career on the stage, beginning in London, and as a playwright. Thereafter he befriended the Cherokee Indians and fought for their territorial rights.
