London: South American Publications Ltd, 1929 Flexible red vinyl covers with gilt title, cover illustration, and spine lettering. This handbook was first published in 1921 as the Anglo-South American Handbook, founded and compiled by William Henry Koebel (1872-1923), a prolific author who had a particular interest in promoting trade with South America. It was compiled as a guide to South America, as well as Mexico and Cuba, for the business traveler, and published by the Federation of British Industry. Much advertising and promotional information on banks, steamship travel/tours, communication, products, etc., including ads on inside covers. With many line-drawn maps within text and one large color folded map following Index in the front section of the book. Interior is Very Good Plus, clean and unworn. Exterior moderately rubbed and scuffed at extremities, with frayed spine tips. Binding tight.

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1940 Cloth. History of Finland from 1152 to pre- World War II period. Few black-and-white diagrams. Moderate rubbing to cover extremities; spine slightly sun-darkened. Library marks limited to bookplate inside front cover, spine number, and tiny amount of glue residue to rear endpaper. Clean and tight.

Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1931 Cloth. Ex-Library. Illustrated with black-and-white plates and drawings. Originated in Great Britain, so all told from a British perspective. With chapters on "The Dog as a Pal," "Steamships as a Hobby," "The Garden Pond," "Poultry and Pigeons," "Building a Model Junk," and more. Cover moderately-to-heavily stained and rubbed, and heavily worn at extremities; spine lettering. Library imperfections as follows: bookplate inside front cover; pocket affixed to inside rear cover; small remnant from removal of "date due" slip on rear endpaper; embossed library seal title page; penciled catalog notations to Dedication page and rear endpaper. Very few small stains to margins; interior otherwise clean and intact.

Heavy wear to tail of spine and cover corners. Light staining to cover. Front and rear endpapers excised. Library inkstamp to top/bottom page blocks and upper margin page 51. Light smudge to inside front cover and last page of text; most text and photos clean, binding tight. Dust jacket moderately worn, including 1" closed tear at upper front corner; spine sticker.

Apparent first edition of this travel guide of the period, part of a series although no specific reference to such. Frontispiece black-and-white photograph reproduction of Michelangelo's David is the only illustration. Light-to-moderate rubbing to cover extremities. Spine sunned; moderate loss and darkening of gilt lettering.Thin black mark about 3/4 inch on rear cover. Few minute pinholes (insect damage) to front gutter. Prior owner attractive bookplate affixed to inside front cover. Prior owner inscription, date at upper front endpaper. Otherwise clean, tight, and unworn.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1917 In the Editor's Note which precedes the text, Percy Lubbock states that this work, dictated in 1914, "represent[s] all that Henry James lived to write of a volume of autobiographical reminiscences to which he had given the name of one of his own short stories. . .It was designed to follow on 'Notes of a Son and Brother' . . ." Spine and outer margins (about 1") of boards sunned; irregular light spotting to cloth along sunned area of front board. Moderate rubbing/fraying to head of spine; light rubbing to other extremities. First in the Pigeon Camp Series; two subsequent volumes series were published in 1907. All original volumes by this author are scarce. With six black-and-white illustrations within the text, including frontispiece. Advertisements for other publications by this publisher in rear. Light cover edgewear. Sunning to cover cloth has resulted in moderately browned spine and margins. Neat prior owner name and date on front endpaper. Small (2" x 1/4" half-moon damp stain at lower edge of title and Contents pages. Otherwise clean and tight.

Portland, Oregon: Timber Press, 1988 Green paper-covered boards. Based on the earlier book by the author, "The Laurel Book," published in 1975, about mountain laurel, Kalmia latifolia. It incorporates all of the information on the laurel's history, botany, taxonomy, genetics, culture, and propagation but includes more color illustrations and new information. Illustrated with many black-and-white and color photographs and diagrams. Lower spine and cover edges lightly-to-moderately rubbed. Moderate shelf-dust staining to top page block. Otherwise clean, tight, and unworn.

Philadelphia: P. Blakiston's Son & Co., 1922 Cloth. Nature text, intended for juvenile reader. With 81 black-and-white illustrations by W.S. Atkinson. Moderate wear to cover extremities; light cover soil. Insect damage to front hinge, but binding holding and tight; interior clean.

New York: Hurst and Company Decorated cloth; gilt spine lettering. No date; circa 1889. With few illustrations despite title page indication of "numerous illustrations." READING COPY. Text pages age-browned and somewhat fragile, but main text block is intact. Upper corners of title page and both pages of Preface are missing; irregular worn/torn away section; portion of title and small section of Preface are missing. Additional loss probably due to rodent damage to narrow 2" of top edge of front endpaper and a few pages of Contents. Page 345/346 torn diagonally but old repair is holding well. Cover cloth stained and discolored, with apparent rodent nibbling to 1" upper rear board. Binding intact.

About Nantucket Island, from the perspective of a 9-year-old boy who wrote the little booklet while confined with a broken leg. Illustrated with un-credited line drawings, some rather cartoon-like, this booklet was published by Nantucket's oldest newspaper. Light cover edgewear . Some irregular moderate soiling to covers. Tiny diagonal clip to head of spine. Interior clean, intact, and unworn.
