The final page has Carl Hertzog's colophon mark and he has signed it. Presumably the basis for the work with the same title published 2 years later. "This keepsake, printed for the Friends of the Bryn Mawr College Library in an edition of 750 copies, was designed by Douglass S. Livingston of Sutter House, Lititz, Pennsylvania. . . . The cover design is from a pencil sketch by Laurence Housman, and the frontispiece is from an hitherto unpublished portrait of Thomas Hardy by Sir William Rothenstein. The letters and illustrations, from the Adelman Collection at Bryn Mawr College Library, are published with permission." A lively assortment of letters from the great man himself, Thomas Hardy, selected from the period when he lived at Max Gate.

Black cloth over boards (w/ spines faded to more of a brown), gilt spine lettering (dulled). Book Condition: Cloth mildly worn, with discoloration in a spot or two. Binding sound and no starting in hinges. Previous owner's name on ffep in neat hand on both volumes. Plates collated and perfect with tissue guards intact, no foxing at all to interior. Very Good at least. It's our belief that the UK and US editions were simultaneously published, making these first editions. One of the strongest pieces of evidence in this claim is the fact that both editions were printed on the Continent and year of publication for each volume is indicated on the it's title page. It is a curiousity to us that while the George Allen editions are widely held institutionally Worldcat shows no institutions holding the Dodd, Mead editions.
