Front cover deeply creased head to tail. Binding tight. King's Daughters' originated in 1886 by Margaret Bottome following her witness to the lonely death of a young seminarian. January 13, of the same year, 10 founding members chose the silver Maltese cross as their badge. They selected the watchword "In His Name" and the text "Not to be ministered unto, but to minister." The ladies began nursing and visiting the sick while providing food and clothing and medicine for the needy. By 1896, there were Branch organizations in 26 states and circles in nearly every country in Europe, Japan, China, Syria and India. Canada had nearly 6,000 members. In 1922 King's Daughters Hospital was opened followed by a school of nursing. Renamed King's Daughters' Medical Center in 1999. ; 8vo .

Type set text in brown with red initials and page headings. Quite attractive. Better than very good condition with bumped corners; original cord binding is loosening and the ends are frayed. A name is penned on the last blank page. Wilbur Dick Nesbit (1871-1927), also known by the pen name Josh Wink, was an American poet and humorist. He considered this to be the first of it's kind in print, "...(A) book containing purely original toasts. For that reason he is very grateful to the hale good folk who so readily and willingly furnished him the sentiments he requested from them." Contributors include noted contemporaries of the day such as Anna Morgan, who helped begin the theater movement; Elbert Hubbard founder of the Roycroft artisan community; Jack London - author; and L. Circa 1931. 90 [6] pages. Advertisements scattered throughout book. The cover is toned along all extremities and has a one inch spine split. Corner tips are worn otherwise a clean, tight copy in exceptional condition. Laid in is a single, 6.25 X 4" sheet advert with photo graphic of a candy display: "Zion 1931 Hot Shot Candy Deal." A detailed index is quite helpful. Typical helpful booklet with sections on table setting, weights and measures and canning. The recipes are primarily of bread, cakes, cookies, pies, pudding etc. Meat is grouped together with short instruction in preparation and serving for the typical cuts of lamb and mutton, beef, and pork but also for the 'extra parts' such as brains, heart, liver etc. Recipes include: Mrs. Lucas' Hot Rolls (Three hour process); Royal Griddle Cakes; Boston Brown Bread; Potato Fudge Cake; Southern Chicken or Turkey Dressing; Fried Chicken-this recipe includes instructions on feeding the chicken, identifying the best chicken from the butcher and final cleaning and care of the fresh chicken. German Lutherans immigrated to Milwaukee in the early 1800's maintaining their language and keeping their faith from becoming Americanized. Not until 1910 did Milwaukee become the home to six English-language Lutheran churches. Sherman Park English Evangelical Lutheran Church was established in 1923 making this cook book a presumed first edition and a historically and culturally important text. General light wear to corners and edges along with light yellow stain on the back flap. Unusual piece of American and California culinary history. "Just 22 years ago, tuna was a food unknown to American tables!" from the cover. Founded in 1914 when Frank Van Camp and his son bought the California Tuna Canning Company, changing the name to the Van Camp Seafood Company. The phrase "Chicken of the Sea", first devised as a way to describe the taste, was so successful that soon it also became the company name. This early promotional piece features recipes new to the American cuisine and decidedly Californian: Tuna Loaf, Tuna Encore, Tuna Baked in Avocado Shells, Deviled Tuna, Tuna-Avocado Cocktail etc..
