The front cover is a reproduction of the fabulous manger scene by Albrecht Durer dated 1511, the interior bears McMurtrie's printed Christmas salutations, the rear panel presents McMurtie's explanatory text on Durer and this woodcut in particular in double columns. A wonderful survivor house in its original stiff card mailing envelope, addressed to Mr. John Vance (Law Librarian) at the Library of Congress. Many of the rhymes take the form of cautionary tales for parents and children. This Victorian illustrated volume is a classic. Contents complete and unmarked, except for two initial drawings with hand shaded backgrounds. At some point in the history of this book, the original spine has been replaced with black cloth tape; boards rubbed at edges; front endpaper lacking; tape removed from hinges of two early leaves; a couple short marginal tears with old repairs.
