Limited to an edition of 500 copies. Original publisher's red cloth - gilt embossed to the spine. Upper edge gilt. Black endpapers. A good only copy. No inscriptions. Notable damp/moisture damage to the original cloth boards - most notably to the corners. Much less so towards the left hand joint of the spine. A little colour run from the front board to the lower corner of the front endpaper, the preliminary blank page, less so the title page (now the extreme corner) and a few other leaves. A 3.8cm expertly repaired split to the cloth at the head of the spine. Upper edge gilt. A former owner's black ink name inscription to the head of the preliminary blank page. Some mostly light scattered spotting to the pages and a very short tear to the leading edge of page 17 expertly repaired. A…

London: G. Bell & Sons, 1888. Limited Edition. Thick Octavo. Limited to 500 copies. xxii, 623 pages, bibliographic references; illustrations. small errata sheet tipped in at xxii. After a long military career with service in the 29th regiments, the 24th during the Second Anglo-Sikh War, he then served with King's Royal Rifle corps and he held the rank of Major until his death in 1889. Besides this major reference work, he also published Monumental Inscriptions of the British West Indies. An ex-library copy with their stamp, rebound in 3/4 red leather over red cloth centrally stamped in gilt depicting a royal coat of arms, raised bands gilt decorated, lettering and top edge gilt, endpapers renewed, light toning to pages. A very nice copy.
