About This Item

Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1988. Hardcover. xiv, 251p., map, illus.,very good condition in like dj. "The most dangerous work in North America at the turn of the century may have been extracting metal-bearing ore from mountains of hard rock. Beset by fears of injury, illness, disability, destitution, and death, hardrock miners did not resign themselves to being victims of industrialization. Beginning in the 1890s the miners worked through local unions both to prevent occupational hazards and to assure themselves of adequate health care. They planned, built, and governed more than twenty general hospitals" --from the dj text.
