Proofs, Galleys & Advance Review Copies

Unlike first editions, proofs and advanced review copies of books were not printed to be consumed publicly. Proofs and advance review copies are printed for publishers, reviewers, and select magazines and bookstores as sneak previews of soon to be available books. Proofs and advance review copies may be different than the finished product, and the level of difference varies greatly. Some differences are minor and grammatical, while other proofs and advance reading copies have entire paragraphs or pages included that are edited out before the first official printing.

Even though book galleys are also early printed versions of books before they are widely released, galleys sometimes serve a slightly different purpose than proofs and advance reading copies. The typeset is determined and it has usually been proofed by an editor, but galleys are often used as the final proofreading copy for the author.

By their nature, proofs, advance review copies, and galleys are quite scarce, so if they are copies of successful titles, they are often considered to be highly collectible and valuable. They are great additions to personal rare book collections, and they can tremendous diversity and insight to the collection.

Description:
Private, 1924. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. Original typed manuscript of a poem by George Sterling, signed by him at the bottom, entitled "To Charles Warren Stoddard". Date: 1909 or later, since the poem laments Stoddard's death, and Stoddard died on April 23rd, 1909, at Monterey, California. Stoddard, born in Rochester, NY, became a San Franciscan in his teens. He became a widely admired writer and poet, himself, in the late nineteenth century. George Sterling was a protege of both Jack London and Ambrose Bierce; Bierce became so enamored of Sterling's poem [this one] that he included it in his own collected works. 5 four-line stanzas. Laid in is a typed "Note to 'The Lake of Innisfree' "; that note, also by Sterling, is essentially an essay in which Sterling tells of a private publication by John Henry Nash of that William Butler Yeats' poem, and manifests Sterling's admiration of both Yeats and Nash. Also included is the typed verse 'The Lake of Innisfree' itself, presumably… Read More

Description:
New York: Dial Press, 1967. Softcover. Near Fine. Uncorrected galley proofs. Bradbound sheets printed rectos only on proofing paper. A little wear on the first and last pages, else near fine. A combination utopia/dystopia where the inhabitants live lives of nonstop pleasure until they are disposed of at age 30, a policy we once endorsed but have long since reassessed. Basis for an interesting film with Michael York, Jenny Agutter, and Farrah Fawcett. A rare issue of an increasingly uncommon title.

First appeared in print under the title, "Poems (Two) 1925"; published 1930 by The Aquilla Press. Three loose 8vo sheets, previously stapled. Three of the corrections are minor but one alters the original 40th line from "Cools at the still, yeasts raise his auburn flour" to Yeast raising auburn flour." In line 47 Cunard corrects the spelling of the word, "orgu[e]illeux" by adding the e, but it never made it into the published work. Signed in pencil, "Nancy Cunard 1925'" at the bottom of the poem. Age toning, paper-clip ghost, minimal wear, else in fine condition.

Artist book in the "International mail art event and simultaneous exhibitions in three cities--NYC, Denver, Seattle." Presented in 1990 with Women's Studio Workshop (NY) in an edition of 60, "distributed to 50 people around the world in the fields of politics, art, the media, science, education, and religion who held positions on both sides" (Sollod Studio, 2023).
A unique and provocative piece of American political history, art activism, third-wave feminism, and the continued struggle for human rights and reproductive freedom. Owned by a selection of world leaders and policy and public-opinion influencers* (see the complete distribution list below), this artifact is scarcely offered for purchase. As relevant now as ever, this exceptionally rare volume is an exhilarating addition to any collection.
This is the signed artist's proof. Twenty-four accordion-fold leaves bound in cloth cover boards. Lithography, relief, and hand-coloring printing methods with Bembo typeface on Rives heavyweight paper.
