Description:
Girard, KS: the newspaper, 1906. Newspaper. 6p. newspaper, folded into quarters; paper toned, some wear at the corner where folds meet, but otherwise very good. We have obtained a small trove of this issue in unusually good condition. Prison letter from Big Bill Haywood appears on front cover, asserting that he remains the Socialist candidate for Governor of Colorado even as he sits in his Idaho prison cell, whatever the Democrats might claim. Many stories in this issue focus on the miners' struggle in that state.

"The most dangerous work in North America at the turn of the century may have been extracting metal-bearing ore from mountains of hard rock. Beset by fears of injury, illness, disability, destitution, and death, hardrock miners did not resign themselves to being victims of industrialization. Beginning in the 1890s the miners worked through local unions both to prevent occupational hazards and to assure themselves of adequate health care. They planned, built, and governed more than twenty general hospitals" --from the dj text.
