About This Item
London: Tilt and Bogue; Simpkin and Co; Orr and Co. Two volumes complete - North Wales, 332pp, [4]; South Wales [14], 284pp, [4]. Uniform half calf and marbled paper over boards, raised bands, spines in six panels, morocco title label to second panel, remaining panels with gilt double fillet border, shell corner pieces joined by elongated volutes and pointille, 'Stormont' pattern marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. Very minor wear to extremities. Internally the additional engraved titles are browned, the tissue-guarded plates are generally lightly browned to edges, with light foxing, occasionally to subject. Both maps are hand-coloured in outline and are quite bright and clean, the map of South Wales has a tear along one fold, but with no loss. Text is generally quite bright and clean. Previous owners (Edward Lee) armorial bookplate to front pastedowns. Quite an attractive pair with all one hundred plates and two maps called for. Roscoe, Thomas (1791-1871), writer and translator, "Roscoe's abundant production over a quarter of a century consists chiefly of translations and travel writing .... Roscoe's own Life of Michael Angelo was published in 1831, but the 1830s were pre-eminently the decade of his travel writing. His nine annual contributions (each a solid volume) to the Landscape Annual (1830-38) were most extensively devoted to Italy and Spain, but he also produced books on Wales (1837-8)" (Oxford DNB). Bound by T. Sowler of Manchester, with his ticket to front pastedowns (pink in North Wales, yellow in South Wales), Ramsden pages 153-4, Spawn and Kinsella 120, 133 (with very similar gilt decoration to spines - see plate 7), 597 and 598. Reprint. Half Calf and Boards. Good. 8vo.
