About This Item

London: John Murray, 1859. First Edition. Oictavo. Frontispiece, xxvii, 403pp., (1)pp. publisher's ad, large folding map bound in at rear, folding map at page x, folding facsimile of a record found of Franklin's expedition, along with several engravings. Many have searched and failed to locate John Franklin and the crew of the Fox until M'Clintock took up the challenge of a voyage to find the missing crew. He eventually discovered one of the ships' lifeboats on King William Island. It was clear that some of the explorers had survived through two winters. The bones found revealed disease was prevalent. Most died of starvation, but evidence also showed lead poisoning could have been a factor. And, cutting marks left on some bones show they may have turned to cannibalism to survive. No one survived. Rebound in a modern 1/4 brown leather over marbled paper covered boards, raised bands, compartments fully gilt decorated, red and black contrasting labels gilt, all edges marbled, endpapers renewed. A very clean bright copy.
