"No one can foretell the future. Even the most imaginative and farsighted of the men of the mid-19th century-men like Jules Verne in technology or Admiral Mahan in naval strategy-saw only in dim outline a few features of the middle of the twentieth century. We now have a range of technology that would have astonished even Jules Verne and it is by no means clear to us what the shape of the mid-twenty-first century will be. We too may see some shapes, some outlines. That is what this book is about." - Foreword, Man on a Spaceship
