The Greatest Generation Speaks

By Tom Brokaw

This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket has some wear and the cover boards have none. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "I first began to appreciate fully all we owed the World War II generation while I was covering the fortieth and fiftieth anniversaries of D-day for NBC News. When I wrote in The Greatest Generation about the men and women who came out of the Depression, who won great victories and made lasting sacrifices in World War II and then returned home to begin building the world we have today - the people I called the Greatest Generation - it was my way of saying thank you. I felt that this tribute was long overdue, but I was not prepared for the avalanche of letters and responses touched off by that book...." - Preface by The Greatest Generation Speaks: Letters and Reflections

Stevenson was born February 5, 1900, on the threshold of the twentieth century. He lived through nearly two thirds of the century and died on July 14, 1965. He was a wanderer and happened to be born in California and to die in England, but his roots were in Bloomington, Illinois. On the next to last Christmas of his life, ambassador of the United States to the United Nations, he went home to Bloomington to visit his sister Buffie in the big old house on East Washington Street where they grew up. He had just come from the UN and he was tired and late in the afternoon lay down on the green velvet sofa in the bay window in the living room and went to sleep. Outside it got dark. His sister came in and quietly lit the lights on the Christmas tree, then stepped into the adjoining library and sat and watched him. The living room was Victorian, filled with Dresden lamps their mother had bought in Germany and an ornate table she had bought in New Orleans, a Japanese sword and a carved elephant tusk their father had bought in Japan. After a while Stevenson shook himself a little, raised his head, then said, Buffie....?" - Chapter One from Adlai Stevenson Of Illinois "

Told through the eyes of primary character Langdon Towne, much of the novel follows the exploits and character of Robert Rogers, the leader of Rogers' Rangers, who were a colonial force fighting with the British during the French and Indian War. Structurally, Northwest Passage is divided into halves. The first half is a carefully researched, day-by-day recreation of the raid by Rogers' Rangers on the Indian village at Saint-Francois-du-Lac, Quebec (or Saint Francis, to the Americans troops), a settlement of the Abenakis, an American Indian tribe. The second half of the novel covers Rogers' later life in London, England, and Fort Michilimackinac, Michigan. Roberts' decision to cover the novel's material in two distinct halves followed the actual trajectory of Rogers' life...."

This book attempts to fill that gap. It will also serve as a foundation for further studies of the denominations which emerged from the colonial Church of England, the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States...." - Preface from Colonial Anglicanism in North America

For another, finding a way to make contact with them to gather facts and figures, especially from the smaller, less highly organized ones, can be a mystery. And then there is the question of which ones to include in a reference book of this kind. Space does not permit me to acknowledge all the help and advice I received from numerous historical societies and their members who were in touch with me at one time or another during preparation and writing of this book. A few names, I confess, I neglected to record or lost along the way. I am thinking particularly of the Francis Marion National Forest ranger who took us to the site of the Wambaw fight and the gentlemen at the courthouse in Calhoun County, South Carolina, who finally put us on the right track to Fort Motte. To you and to others who I may have neglected to mention, my sincere apologies...." - Acknowledgements (for all three volumes of the Guide) from The Bicentennial Guide to the American Revolution This is a three book set and may require additional postage. The Church is meant to be our guide. The book, which we are reading, has more in it than the Ethiopian's book, which probably contained only chapters of Isaiah. It is larger even than the Old and New Testaments together. It includes the book of Holy Scripture, and the book of Nature, and the long commentary on them both which is written by experience. It is the book of life." - The Doctrine Of The Church, The Episcopal Church

Even the most imaginative and farsighted of the men of the mid-19th century-men like Jules Verne in technology or Admiral Mahan in naval strategy-saw only in dim outline a few features of the middle of the twentieth century. We now have a range of technology that would have astonished even Jules Verne and it is by no means clear to us what the shape of the mid-twenty-first century will be. We too may see some shapes, some outlines. That is what this book is about." - Foreword, Man on a Spaceship

The Church of England and the American Episcopal Church

By H.G.G. Herklots

This book is as new. A missing dust cover and slight yellowing of the edges of the pages is all that is wrong with this book. "This is a pioneering kind of book, I believe, which ought to go into the kit of every bishop at the next Lambeth Conference-indeed every delegate to any Anglican meeting or any ecumenical meeting, for that matter. Canon Herklots calls it 'a study of the relationship between the Church of England and its oldest overseas child. As such he is concerned not merely with chronicling familiar (and not so familiar) material, but with relating the people and events of one Church with those of the other in ways which spread out before us the wide theatre within which Anglican unity first found itself and began exploring its appropriate forms. From the voyages of the sixteenth century to the first Lambeth Conference in 1867, he studies the relationships-among individuals, ideas, institutions." - Foreword by Stephen F. Bayne Jr. from The Church of England and the American Episcopal Church

It was not one of the largest Churches in Christendom, but it's influence in every State in the Union and in the lands of its overseas missions was out of all proportion to its numbers" - Prologue, The Episcopal Church In The United States: 1789-1931
