It is that, but it is much more than that. The word religious is said to mean "under bond" or "under rule." Religious are men and women who have bound themselves by a vow to God to live their lives in a community under a rule according to three Evangelical Counsels. How can such a life be justly considered strange or eccentric or selfish? It is no more than an attempt to live the Christian life in its fullness and perfection." - Chapter 1. "This volume does not form part of the series entitled 'The form of the Servant', although I hope that it may be regarded as further illustrating the principles of biblical interpretation there adopted. In the course of the past century there has been amongst Anglicans a periodic discussion of matters connected with baptism and confirmation. During the second half of this period, however, a number of new factors have been contributing to the development of a fresh situation. Amongst these are the growing recognition that both Jewish and more ancient backgrounds are all-important and secondly the recovery of early liturgical texts amongst which The Apostolic Tradition of Hippolytus stands out. My own interest was first aroused by F. Gavin's small, but learned, book on The Jewish antecedents of The Christian Sacraments (1928), which showed a close continuity between Jewish and Christian forms of initiation and which, in that respect, is still highly relevant. For example, it makes clear the strongly Jewish background of the Hippolytan rites, and even a substantial identity of rubrics....." - Foreword from Confirmation: It's Place In The Baptismal Mystery

In 1607, a certain Madame de Charmoisy, whose husband was an ambassador of the Duke of Savoy and a relative of St. Francis, visited Annecy to attend a lawsuit, and while there placed herself under his spiritual direction. When she returned to court he gave her a series of written spiritual instructions, which he had begun to compile as early as 1602, for the guidance of persons seeking to live a devout life in the world. These instructions were shown to Pere Jean Fourier of the Society of Jesus, who considered them 'a treasure of devotion', and so valuable that he strongly urged St. Francis to have them printed, with the result that the first edition, edited by St. Francis, was issued in 1609 under the title Introduction a la Vie Devote...." This has served as a catalyst for a world-wide outburst of creative liturgical and musical activity of a magnitude perhaps unparalleled since the Reformation. The Hymnal, 1982, the culmination of more than a decade of work by the Standing Commission on Church Music, incorporates many of the riches of this contemporary renaissance. This hymnal is a response to the challenge of the Church's mission to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to a changed and changing world...." - Preface from Hymnbook 1982

""When answering my letters, requesting information about their communities, several Superiors have asked why, as a Roman Catholic, I should be sufficiently interested in Anglican religious orders to think it worth while to write a book about them! Very much the same surprise has been expressed by some of my co-religionists when I mentioned the work on which I was engaged. So I explained that the subject is one which has attracted me for nearly half a century, ever since I was a youth of fifteen and chanced to pick up a copy of The Life of Father Ignatius, O.S.B., The Monk of Llanthony by the Baroness de Bertouch (London, 1940) - a strange introduction to the monastic life! Since then this interest has grown, rather than decreased. It was revived definitely about fifteen years ago when I added a long introductory chapter, dealing with religious communities in the Church of England, to The Benedictines of Caldey (London, 1940). Then one day it struck me that it was high time that somebody wrote an up-to-date history of Anglican religious communities...." - Foreword from The Call of the Cloister: Religious Communities And Kindred Bodies In The Anglican Communion

There is also minor wear to the edges of the cover boards and the corners have been slightly bumped. The previous owners name is affixed to the inside front cover board. The pages are crisp, white and clear of any markings. "For nearly two millenia, the Bible has been the cardinal text for Judaism and Christianity. Its stories and characters are part of both the repertoire of Western literature and the vocabulary of educated women and men. It is, however, more than a collection of ancient tales. Even before a canonical list of books considered sacred scripture or holy writ was established, the writings we now call the Bible were considered normative: they laid down the essential principles of how human beings should deal with God and with each other. Te practice of quoting from, an alluding to, earlier texts as authoritative is found within the Bible itself and has continued unabated in subsequent Jewish and Christian writings. At the same time, the Bible has also been formative; subsequent generations of believers have seen themselves as descended from, and in continuity with, those to whom God had spoken and for whom he had acted definitively in the past, and the recital of those words and events has been instrumental in shaping the religious communities of succeeding generations. The Bible has thus had an immeasurable influence on Judaism and Christianity, on the cultures of which they have formed a part, and on all those traditions in some ways derived from them, such as Islam...." - Introduction from The Oxford Companion to the Bible

The pages are yellowing and tanning, but free from any markings. "In their fifteen-hundred-year history, Benedictines have passed on to parishes all over the globe their tradition of praising God in song. In 1959 the Liturgical Press published a prime example of that with the first edition of Our Parish Prays and Sings.Through several editions, including the Book of Sacred Song, the American parish has come to know the best of classical Christian hymnody, in both the vernacular and the Latin chant. Much of the tradition of thirty years in promoting congregational song has been included in The Collegeville Hymnal, with emphasis as well on music and texts of notable merit gleaned from the work of contemporary composers and writers. Indeed, particular attention has been paid to texts from which archaic or non-inclusive language has been eliminated, except where poetic importance precludes change...." - Introduction from The Collegeville Hymnal

This book attempts to fill that gap. It will also serve as a foundation for further studies of the denominations which emerged from the colonial Church of England, the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States...." - Preface from Colonial Anglicanism in North America

An archbishop of Canterbury is better placed than most to appreciate the degree to which this issue is confronting us today. It lies at the heart of so many discussions between churches, as well as of some of the most controversial and sensitive matters which face us all. The nature and exercise odf authority will be a vital issue at the 1988 Lambeth Conference...." - Foreword from Authority in the Anglican Communion: Essays Presented to Bishop John Howe

"It seems presumptuous for any one, and especially a member of the laity, to attempt to add to that which has already been said and written upon the spiritual life of the Christian priest. Only the overwhelming importance of the subject for the work of the Church, and the fact that in the pressure of outward life we need again and again to be reminded of those unchangeable realities of the inward life which alone give any value to our active work can justify this. But these certain truths are surely sufficient reason for considering once again the special nature of the priest's life of prayer; what it means, what it is for, and why it matters so much...." - from The Parish Priest And The Life Of Prayer

For another, finding a way to make contact with them to gather facts and figures, especially from the smaller, less highly organized ones, can be a mystery. And then there is the question of which ones to include in a reference book of this kind. "The manuscript of the present work was in all essentials completed in July 1939. Some steps towards publication were then taken; but the war brought inevitable delays. During the interval which followed some of the additional notes were rewritten and others were added. In all else the book practically unchanged. In The Incarnate Lord (1928) an attempt was made to relate the revelation of God in Christ to current philosophy. But now another problem presented itself. What if the Gospel becomes obscured by our presuppositions and preoccupations, so that we neither see the scope of its application nor suffer it to speak for itself. The conviction grew that this danger was present in the theological situation of today. In particular it became clear that certain aspects of the New Testament were not receiving the attention which was due to due to them...." - Preface from The Common Life In The Body Of Christ
