About This Item

Newcastle: John Sykes, 1823. [5], 2-36pp. Later half roan and marbled paper over boards, title in gilt to spine. Rubbed to extremities, internally the title is foxed, with some light browning and foxing throughout, but tolerably clean. Original upper plain wrapper bound in, with a presentation inscription 'presented to Mr. Jackson by Iona Walton' (presumably related to William Walton, who was a member of the jury). Bookplate of J. Cresswell to front pastedown. Carr was a constable and watchman in Newcastle, but the jury found for Watson and he was awarded 40s and costs. There was another issue (possibly later, 1828?), with a vignette of Samuel Johnson to the title page, instead of the Newcastle Guildhall as here. Sykes' bookseller sign was 'Johnson's Head', and another printed by George Angus with a frontispiece, in the same year. BL, Aberdeen, and possibly Newcastle in Library Hub. First Edition?. Hardback. Good. 8vo. Pamphlet.
