Boston: Dana Estes & Company. Very Good. N.D.. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No date, c1890's, Brown cloth w/gilded, now dull, decortive spine, heavy paper with deckled edges, red & black inked title page. Out of series w/o number or letter (limited to 74 numbered, 26 lettered) A section, pages v-ix are missing which would have been the introduction and also the illustration list, else complete text block. Some loosing at the front hinge, along with some erased green pencil marks on back pastdowns along with a small bookseller sticker. Frontispiece and five black and white illustrations w/tissues. Remains a very nice copy. Captain Frederick Marryat was born July 10 1792, and died August 8 1848. He retired from the British navy in 1828 in order to devote himself to writing. In the following 20 years he wrote 26 books, many of which are among the very best of English literature, and some of which are still in print. Privateers were essentially freelance ships, sanctioned during wartime to sail and do battle on behalf of adversary governments, and this tale follows Alexander Musgrave, a privateer-turned-adventurer, across three continents and into the arms of a beautiful woman. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 291 pages .
