About This Item

Published by J. Smillie, 1827. No binding. Good. French text. Plan of the Saguenay River. Lakes, Rivers & Streams, as well as the quality of the soil of the Terrein and the Woods located on either side of the said River of Saguenay, made according to an Esquise and Information given by Pascal Taché ecuier, Lord of Kamouraska, after having resided during the space of twenty two years doing the Pelleteries Trade at Pointe Bleu, Shéhutimitsh and Tadoussac, made by the Soussigné Clerc Arpenteur, A. Larue, Quebec 27th Dec (emb) re 1825. (spelling and punctuation as written ). Reduced to one half the scale of the Original Plan of A (dolphus). Larue by W (illiam) Sax, Land Surveyor, Quebec April 1827. Eng (rave) d by J (ames). Smillie Jr. Black and white copperplate engraving on wove paper with the water mark "Balston & Co, 1825". Dimensions: 43.0 x 56.5 cm. Ladder; 1 '' = 4.25 leagues. Good condition.

A scarce and important map prepared for the "Report of the commissioners to explore the Saguenay in 1828". It appears that this is the first accurate map of the Saguenay region ever published. It was prepared on the basis of the personal knowledge and travel books of Pascal Taché (1757-1830), Lord of Kamouraska since 1790, and a fur trader who has traveled the territory of the King's Post offices for nearly 25 years; it is therefore easy for him to draw a map of the main toponymic and geographical elements found within this rich region operated by the Hudson's Bay Company since 1821. The map is completed with data from Father Charlevoix, as well as with information reflecting the activities of the Jesuits (a church near Lac St-Jean) and the Hudson's Bay Company in the region (Tadoussac Trading Post). A current path leading to Lac St-Charles and a proposed path to "Malbaye" (La Malbaie) are also presented, as are the establishments around this settlement.
