About This Item

London: Simkin, Masrhall & Co, 1847. 2nd Edition. SCARCE EARLY SIR ISAAC BROCK BIOGRAPHY

Second UK edition. 4.5 by 7.25 Inches, xii, [1]-492pp. Original blind stamped cloth covers with original spine saved and professionally rebacked. Back cover cloth with top half and spine faded. Previous owners name and dated Toronto 1908 on top right inside front blank. Very little foxing present very clean text. Very good condition. Previous owners name on inside front cover end paper. Nice copy of a scarcer book than the first edition published two years prior in 1845 with only 468pp. Additional material in this volume amounts to about one third of the first edition.

Major-General Sir Isaac Brock was the cousin of the author and editor, Ferdinand Brock Tupper.

"Ferdinand Brock Tupper, the historian of Guernsey, was a far relative of Sir Charles, Canadian statesman. Presumed a special gift due to the Confederation of Canada in 1867. The first descended from John Tupper and the second from Thomas, two brothers of Chichester, England, with a German origin. F. B. Tupper was more approximate to Sir Charles Lewis Tupper, an Oxford's legal eminence and Indian administrator during the Victorian period, also from the same Guernsey branch." quoted from P.F. Tupper.

The first, edition of this Memoir was compiled in a very few weeks, amid other avocations, and while attending the sick bed of my father, who died shortly before its completion ; and owing to this want of preparation, as well as to the difficulty of obtaining materials after the lapse of so many years, and at so great a distance from the scene of Sir Isaac Brock's principal labours, I candidly confess that it did not satisfy my own mind. But its publication having happily drawn forth much valuable matter, which in a few years would otherwise have been lost, it will be seen, from a very cursory perusal of this volume, that it is a great improvement on its predecessor, as several errors, topographical and others, arising from the cause just mentioned, have been corrected - many additional letters from Sir Isaac Brock are introduced, while a few others to him of little interest are omitted - and some new and graphic anecdotes and incidents are interwoven in the course of the narrative. (The additional matter in this volume amounts to about one third of the first edition). Quoted from the Introduction by Tupper to the second edition.

Brock was in the military in Jamaica and also served in Upper Canada. and was a general in the war of 1812 and in Canada became familiar with the Shawnee and also the chief at the time Tecumseh.
