About This Item

New York: Charles Magnus & Co. 12 Frankfort St, 1860. 1st Edition presumed. No binding. Good. Nice Illustrated Magnus letter sheet, showing Kingston, on Lake Ontario. Paper edges all chipping otherwise good.

Image size: 4 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches on paper 8-3/4 x 10-1/2. A series of souvenir prints issued by the New York firm of Charles Magnus & Co. Beginning around the middle of the nineteenth century, regular and bird's-eye views of North American cities became very popular. These were originally issued in a large folio size, but publishers, such as Magnus, soon realized that there was a market for smaller versions of these prints. Magnus was perhaps the most prolific of these publishers and he issued his small engravings in different formats. Some were issued with black painted margins, some with plan margins, and some as illustrations on lettersheets. Such letter sheets preceded postcards as useful mementoes.
