About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. Near Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1983. First Edition; First Printing. Cloth. 0394531795 . A nice first edition/first printing in Near Fine, seemingly unread condition, shallow sunning at edges and slight wrinkle to spine, in Fine lightly tanned dust-jacket. From the collection of Betty Anderson, legendary art director of publisher Knopf in the late 20th century as evidenced by her (small and unobtrusive) inventory number and signature on front paste down; "Writing criticism is to writing fiction and poetry as hugging the shore is to sailing the open sea". Edmund Wilson is one of the authors getting Updike's attention, others include Vladimir Nabokov, Franz Kafka, Muriel Spark, Ann Tyler, etc. But also celebrities such as Louise Brooks, Doris Day, golfers Sam Snead and Arnold Palmer get their applause; 8vo; [2], x, 110, [6] pages .
