The front cover has two bent corners one with the cloth worn and one with a small tear, some edge wear, some light soil on open side edge. The SPINE text has been worn with the years and parts are not as clear but the entire text is present and legible, the spine is worn at top and bottom with wear to the cloth on the top 1/8 inch of spine and same on bottom, the spine has a bit of edge wear to front and back edges.… Read More

Very clean inside (faint foxing to endpapers), and light fading to cloth. A previous owner name of a scholar on the front endpaper and a faint circular handstamp of Neapolitan bookbinder to that page. Vellum spine simply ruled and decorated in black. Text in Italian and Latin. 2 fold-out documents at end. Count Riccardo Filangieri di Candida, was a member of an old Neapolitan family, an authority on medieval and modern Italian history and art, and author of books and articles in these fields. He was the Keeper of the Royal State Archives at Naples, during the second World War. 10" high X 7" wide, 535 pages. Title page in red and black. Preface lightly tones. Otherwise, pages clean and free of marking, soiling, staining or foxing. Bound in later bookbinder's board with paper spine. Covers lightly rubbed and spine a little darkened. A very good copy of this scarce 18th Century treatment of, among others, the Augustinian, Benedictine, Cistercian, Carmelite, Dominican, Franciscan and Jesuit orders, accompanied with a general history and treatment of monasticism.

The covers are worn and the spines brittle with minor loss at the tops and bottoms, and a 1.5-inch piece missing from the bottom of the spine of Vol.1, also a tasteful bookplate in each volume.
