About This Item

ND. No binding. Very Good. Autograph small leaf, 5 x 4 inches, clipped from bottom of dictated, handwritten letter. Smith's signature written below nal 7 words of the dictated letter. Leaf glued to a portion of the same or another letter showing "The Grange" as return address. Very good condition.

Goldwin Smith was a British/Canadian writer, journalist, and controversialist and active in the United Kingdom and Canada. Born and educated in the UK, he later moved to USA. he decided in 1871 to move to Toronto and to be near some relatives. Four years later that move became permanent as a consequence of his marriage in Toronto on 3 Sept. 1875 to William Henry Boulton's widow, Harriet Elizabeth Mann, née Dixon, who was two years his junior, an American by birth, and possessor of a significant fortune which included the estate named the Grange. Smith settled into a late-blooming marital bliss and the Grange's affluent surroundings with ease: "a union for the afternoon and evening of life," he told his American friend Charles Eliot Norton. He was, as he remarked after Harriet died in 1909, "finally bound to Canada by the happiest event of my life."
