About This Item
George Young was a 17-year-old Canadian marathon swimmer who on 15-16 January 1927 became the rst swimmer to swim the channel between Catalina Island and the mainland of California. This took place during a contest called the Wrigley Ocean Marathon, sponsored by chewing gum and sports magnate William Wrigley Jr. Young was the only person to complete the swim, taking 15 hours and 44 minutes to complete the 35 kilometer (22 mile) course. This feat earned him a prize of $25,000 and the nickname "The Catalina Kid". Later won in 1931, the CNE Marathon Swim. He was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1955.
In 1932 George married his first wife, Margaret Ravior, an American, Philadelphia women, a three-time winner of the women's Toronto CNE 10 mile marathon swims in 1930, 1931 and 1932 They went back to Philadelphia to live 1935. George didn't hit it off with Margaret, his fun-loving first wife, and they were divorced.
