About This Item

New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1924. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. FIRST PRINTING of First USA Edition. Original black cloth with greenish globe decoration front covers, gilt lettering front covers & spines. Spines faded with spine lettering darkened and hard to see, wear at corners, some foxing restricted to pages opposite photo plates (nearly all pages have no foxing), old owner bookplate on front pastedown of each volume, no other owner marks or writing on any pages, tight bindings. The books measure 241mm tall x 162mm, and have 387 pages & 437 pages, 25 b/w photos, 4 drawings, 6 maps, index. The author travelled nearly everywhere. This account is a bit eccentric or delusory. The author studied reaction speed of firemen, invented a device for squirting chlorine gas into enemy trenches (WWI), took out patent in 1915 of an armored car and even an airship. Includes his travels in Tibet where he made obviously false climbing claim to have set in 1899 a new high altitude record of 23490' by making the 1st ascent of "Lumpa" Pk near Mt Api. His other experiences in Tibet have been dismissed as false by many, yet Herbert Tichy was able to confirm much of Landor's descriptions.
