Description:
New York: Macmillan Company, 1937. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. FIRST PRINTING of first USA edition. Original blue cloth, gilt lettering spine. Rear cover has burn marks and the bottom of the text block has similar browning. The inside pages are fine and not burnt or browned other than the bottom margin of the last few pages and the rear EPs. The pages are clean, have no foxing, no loss, no owner marks or writing on any pages, tight binding. Other than the browning rear cover and bottom of the text block the book is in excellent condition. The book does not have a smoky smell except when one's nose is pressed against the bottom of the text block (even then the scent is very slight). Flipping the pages creates no odor. This book suffered the damage while packed in a box that was super-heated on the bottom. Since the box was fully packed and squeezed tightly against and under other boxes, there was not enough oxygen for a flame to ignite, but there was partial… Read More

Ross-on-Wye: Carreg, 2004. First Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. As New/As New. FIRST PRINTING of FIRST UK Edition. TEXT IN ENGLISH. Flawless condition in flawless dust wrapper. No previous owner marks or writing on any pages. Obtained directly from the publisher with no former owners. Original navy hardcover, silver lettering spine. Book measures 232mm tall x 15cm, and has 208 pages, 49 color & 18 b/w photos, list of Broad Peak summiters. Superb account of the 1957 Broad Peak expedition that accomplished the first ascent. Prior to this book, the firsthand accounts in english have been only those by Kurt Diemberger who launched his career with the story of this expedition. Over the years, Diemberger has carefully managed his version of the trip. Finally, this book gives voice to the accounts by the other members (the leader Marcus Schmuck, Fritz Winterstellar, and the liaison officer Qader Saeed), and they don't always paint the romantic vision recounted by Diemberger. Seattle: Cloudcap, 1994. First Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. As New/As New. 1994 FIRST PRINTING of FIRST USA Edition. SIGNED by Alan Burgess and by Adrian Burgess on the title page in black pen. Original light yellow cloth, black lettering spine. The book is in new condition having been purchased directly from the publisher and kept in climate controlled storage for years. The book was signed by the Burgess twins for the publisher. I was told by the publisher that only one box of the book was signed by both of them. Examples signed by both are very uncommon since they have been rarely together at public events. Most double-signed copies are those inscribed to friends, family, and acquaintances. The book measures 235mm tall x 15mm, and has 463 pages, 26 b/w & 23 color photos. Account of climbs (Alps, UK, Canada, Logan's S Buttress, McKinley's Cassin Spur, FitzRoy, Huascaran, K2, Everest, Dhaulagiri, Cho Oyu, Manaslu, Lhotse Shar, Annapurna IV, etc.) & escapades worldwide by the notorious climbing… Read More

It has 61 pages and many index maps including two folding ones. One index map shows Mt Everest, Makalu and Gauri Sankar with printed elevations 29002 feet, 27790 feet, and 23440 feet respectively. The covers have edge tears with one on the front being 5cm long. The book has been updated by hand in red pen mainly in the textual specification section at the rear. I did not seen any corrections on map images. These updates were almost certainly done by the publisher prior to selling this item. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL ITEM BEING OFFERED.

Very clean covers with no fading or marks. However, the book's text block was obviously exposed to severe moisture since the pages have slight warping (not bad), and two of the photo plate (page 136) have been stuck together (now harshly opened) resulting in a tear in one leaf and some scrappy loss at separation points --- see photo.
