About This Item

Toronto: The Rose Publishing Company, 1886. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. First edition. 8.5 x 5.5 inches,. (5), [3]-135 pages, frontis of author, many b/w illustrations, text in two columns; brown cloth, beveled edges/gilt titles. Gilt decorate cover extremities quite worn, soiling internally end papers spotted. Fair condition. An uncommon novel.

This was Sheppard's first book, a fiction, "Dolly," which appeared first in serial form in the Toronto "News"

Sheppard started the famous Canadian Magazine "Saturday Night" in 1887. Sheppard's magazine began as a broadsheet that kept its readers up to date on current events, Toronto's upper crust and what books to read. Originally called Toronto Saturday Night. One key to Sheppard's (Toronto) Saturday Night success was the uncommon focus and attention paid to Women and Women's issues.
