After the Clemens family moved to Hartford in 1871, Warner and Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) became friends, and collaborated on The Gilded Age (1873-74). Warner was assistant editor (1860) and editor (1861-7) of The Hartford Press, and after The Press was merged into The Hartford Courant, was co-editor with Joseph R.
