About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1924. First and Limited Edition . Decorative Cloth. Near Fine. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Illustrations from Original Trademarks. New York: Alfred A, Knopf, 1924. First and limited edition, limited to 2,050 copies, of which this is # 648. Folio, cloth boards with full-cover trademark device, 64 pp. including index, Pages unopened at top, hence one-side printing only, as intended. Printing by Pynson Printers, engraving by Beck Engraving Co.; paper by Japan Paper Company and binding by the E.C. Lewis Company. Some darkening to spine, a few other minute signs of wear. Just a tad short of near fine; handsome copy. Joseph Spinel gives an informative but pleasantly taciturn two pages of text as an introduction, then lets the dozens of classic American trademarks presented here speak for themselves. Sinel, a native New Zealander, began working in graphic departments of various sorts in New Zealand and England before coming across the pond in 1918, when he began to truly contribute to commercial graphic design. In addition to his compilation of this and other publications, he coined the term "industrial design" as a reference to industrial objects used in advertising, and designed hundreds of trademarks himself, including those of The Art Institute of Chicago, Doubleday Doran, The Archaeological Institute and Hoffman Ginger Ale.
