About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1944. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Fourth printing before publication. Near Fine in a Very Good jacket, unclipped ($2.50), scuffed at the spine, bumped and with a few small chips at the edges. Red cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. Square and firmly bound with a green top stain, former owner's information inside the front board, clean otherwise. One of Hersey's war novels, partly drawn from his own experience as a war correspondent during World War II. The novel centers on finding a town bell after the previous one had been destroyed by Mussolini's facist regime. Awarded the 1945 Pulitzer Prize and adapted into the Henry King film that same year.
