About This Item
Worcester, MA: Printed By Isaac Sturtevant for Remark Dunnell, 1814. 16mo. 192 pages. Sharon Block writing in the Journal of American History notes that this is one of the books that terrified and incensed the populace who read about the vicious rapes by the redcoats (p. 116ff.). While courts of law kept the intimate details from the wider public, newspapers, books, almanacs, and a host of printed material were less restrained though leaving little to the imagination to whom the subject of rape was of prurient interest. After describing the various outrages, the address says: How long will you permit this? (report and appeal from Col. Richard E. Parker, Westmoreland County, Virginia) Bound in full contemporary sheep, flat spine ruled in gilt, red morocco spine label gilt, pages toned, light wear to binding. A very good copy.
